The wistful ruins of Champaner

Uncategorized

Champaner is a historical city about 50 kilometers away from Baroda. It sounds immensely familiar thanks to the reference in the award winning movie Lagaan, as the place where the story is based. But be prepared for a welcome surprise. If you are religiously inclined, you can make a trip on a ropeway to the Kalika Mata Mandir atop the Pavagadh hill looming over the region. On the other hand, if calm ruins and architectural beauty is what you seek; explore the many mosques, fort ramparts and remnants of a bygone era that dot the plains of the region in close proximity. The fortified walls of the citadel exist to this date, with the settlement of Pavagadh village living within.

The  Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, was designated as a  UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

Here are a string of images from this beautiful city.
